Rebo's Research Adventure

Leveraging the power of a tablet game to educate players about life-changing research

The Task

In the East of England, the NHS were looking to engage and educate people about the value of research. Hoping to encourage patients, as well as their friends and family, to find out more and even volunteer for research programmes, the NHS joined forces with Production Bureau to create an iPad game for exhibitions and events. The game would teach players about the importance of diabetes research, while keeping them entertained and engaged – and to build it, Production Bureau came to us.

The Process

We worked closely with Production Bureau to work out the best ways for the game to run. While they designed all the assets, we brought them to life in a procedurally-generated game built in Unity 3D that sends the main character – Rebo the robot – on a journey back through time after the world’s diabetes research is accidentally wiped out. The player has to guide Rebo through the different time periods in each level, collecting vital research along the way. Plus, players need to pick up time crystals to gain extra time while avoiding enemies.

The Outcome

The game was launched at Norwich Science Festival in October 2018 with great success, with plans to expand the game onto mobile and web platforms, as well iterations for different medical conditions.

Do you have a message you want to convey? A situation that needs simulating, or an audience that needs reaching? Whatever your challenge – we have the ideas, the experience, and the equipment to help.
